About Topiary
Topiary – the art of clipping trees and shrubs into
ornamental shapes was first brought to Britain by the
Romans. Nurtured through successive centuries principally
within the gardens of monasteries the traditional of topiary
became hugely popular all over Europe. From the late 1500’s
and lead in time to the development of the Knot Garden
and Parterre. These early Roman gardeners are thought
to have learnt the basic skills from their slaves –
who came from all corners of the ancient world. Decoratively
trimmed shrubs have fascinated gardeners ever since.
The intriguing Laurus Noblis with its distinguished
heritage, strikes a bold contemporary note in the context
of a 21st Century or heritage project or renovation
garden.
Bay Tree (Laurus noblis). A native of Meditarranean
climate, Laurus noblis is one of the oldest cultivated
plants. The ancient Romans and Greeks used its highly
aromatic foliage to weave crowns for their victorious
athletes. Late 19th century gardeners started using
it in formal planting schemes. These species are fully
hardy in an elegant garden or useful in your kitchen
